Saturday saw the visit of Helensburgh/Lomond to Ruth Menzies Field in the return fixture of the first game of the season which Helensburgh won narrowly. This game proved to be just as tight with both defences being on top.
It wasn’t until midway through the first half the first points were scored, this came from quick thinking, from Strathendricks Calum Mackay with a quick tap penalty which took him just meters short of the line but managed to offload to Archie Symmonds who was first in support to take it over the try line.
It wasn’t until midway through the second half before the next points were scored with a fantastic individual try from Finlay Buchanan. Proving that props don’t just push in the scrum they can also score spectacular try’s.
Helensburgh responded with a try of their own between the posts which brought the score to 10-7.
Strathendrick heads didn’t go down and replied shortly after with an outstanding individual effort from Cameron Baxter leaving several Helensburgh players in his wake as he crashed over the try line. Cameron maintained his composure to slot over the two extra points to make the score line 17-7.
The final score of the game came from Helensburgh who narrow the scoreline to just five points which made for a very tense last 10 minutes.
Strathendrick’s outstanding tackling and determination in defence saw them close the game out with a final score of Strathendrick/Balfron 17-12 Lomond & Helensburgh.
Congratulations goes to Calum Robb for winning man of the match in a game where every Strathendrick player was outstanding.
