Before this match the clubhouse was busy thanks to the most excellent organisation skill of jenny Campbell who had arranged a-well attended Ladies Day. Unfortunately as a result of the wet weather during the match many of the ladies decided to spend the duration of the 80 minutes indoors and so missed a good display by the home team.
With the match ball presented by AS Black Farmers of Thornhill, the home side kicked off just before 3.00 pm in what was a heavy but fortunately short-term downpour. In the first 5 minutes ‘Endrick conceded 2 penalties and the game was moved to the home side’s 22. A Waysiders’ line out was stolen and the ball moved through sure hands and up to the 10m line – when the pass was made to winger Finlay Kay he outstripped the remaining defenders to make a scoring run to the line. The conversion attempt from close to the touchline was missed and so after 6 minutes of play Strathendrick held a 5-0 lead.
From the re-start it was clear that the Fintry side were keen to add to their tally and 2 minutes later Murray Calderwood broke clear from a mid-field maul with James Ogilvie in close support as this pair continued up field they were joined by Kyle Campbell who took the last pass and covered the remaining 15m to score under the posts – he then converted his own try.
‘Endrick were then forced into a change in their back line when centre Euan Hyland was forced off with a wrist injury. The first quarter of the match was completed with the home side leading 12-0.
The last 10 minutes of the half brought a penalty and 3 tries – on the 30 minute mark Kyle Campbell added to his day’s tally with a well struck penalty, then 4 minutes later Christian Lamb broke through for a great individual score. When the restart kick was returned to the Waysiders’ 22 the clearing kick was charged down and Jack Kerr gathered to gross the line. While neither of the tries were converted this was not to be the end of the first half scoring as following a number for rucks and driving mauls Waysiders, aided by some poor defence, got their first try of the game under the posts. The successful conversion brought the first half to a close.
Half time 25-7
The scoring in the second half was to be more sparse than in the first 40 minutes as the visitors appeared to change their game plan and slowed the game down using mainly their forwards. This tactic most certainly contained the home side who after 58 minutes of the match added a Kyle Campbell penalty to their total. Just 2 minutes later Christian Lamb scored his second try of the match finishing off a quality piece of handling, with the conversion missed Strathendrick led 33-7 but only for 2 minutes as from a quickly taken tap penalty the Waysiders forwards charged over the line for an unconverted try.
The final 8 minutes of the match were fairly uneventful except for the sending off of the Waysiders scrum half for what the referee deemed an unacceptable act of foul play details of which were unclear from the touchline.
Final score 33-12
