On Tuesday 25th April, Balfron High School/Strathendrick were crowned Winners of this years SP Energy Network Schools Rugby Championship 2023 hosted by Glasgow Warriors at Scotstoun Stadium.
The competition began a few months ago with 28 different schools competing to reach the finals. Balfron successfully won their first round matches to reach the semi finals. In total six schools returned with multiple teams for a chance to win a space in the final of the SP Energy Networks Championship. These were Largs Academy, Balfron High School, Wallace High School, Marr College, Falkirk High School and Stonelaw High School.
Balfron High School and Stonelaw High School were successful in winning their semi final rounds and reaching the final. Balfron experienced tough matches in the semi finals also beating last years champions Wallace High School.
In the finals, Balfron U13 boys started their finals game on the main pitch at Scotstoun stadium watched on by 150 home supporters. The boys performed brilliantly both in attack and defence winning their match.
Then stepped up both the U14 boys and U14 girls games. These were played concurrently on the same pitch (split 2 x halves). The girls were well matched by Stonelaw and were behind by one or two scores at the halfway point. This didn't deter the girls at all, who came into the second half with more energy and determination turning around the deficit and winning at the whistle. The U14's boys played a tough Stonelaw side with some talented young rugby players. Nonetheless, through their effective teamwork, defence and support play won through and they finished the event with a 3rd win for Balfron, sealing the championship.
Congratulations to Stonelaw High School who were worthy finalists and who played 3 very close matches.
Scotland Internationalist George Horne, Evie Wills, Sione Tuipolotu were in attendance at the event supporting the teams and awarding the medals/trophy.
A huge congratulations to the boys and girls, coaches, school teachers and parents who helped the players on their journey to winning the championship!
